Finding the Missing Angle

Continuing to use what we know, we are able to find further missing angles.

There are 360 degrees in a full turn.

The angles in a quadrilateral add up to 360 degrees.

Opposite angles when 2 lines cross are equal to each other.

                            Music

Today you will learn the the difference between duration and tempo and find out how they affect the feel of any music you listen to.

Duration

Having a mix of short and long notes makes a piece of music more interesting. Imagine a piece of music that used notes that were all the same length.

Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 is a piece of classical music famous for its dramatic opening. The first few notes are three short notes followed by a longer one (short, short, short, long).

Tempo

Tempo is the speed of the music. Music can be really fast, really slow or somewhere in between.

Love songs and sad pieces of music are often slow. Fast songs can be happy and make you want to move around.

Some music changes speed. For example, Zorbas by Mikis Theodorakis is a piece of guitar music from the film Zorba The Greek that starts slow and gets quicker as it goes along.

Musical terms

Here are some musical terms about tempo:

adagio - slow
accelerando - speed up
allegro - quick

Watch Beethoven's Symphony Number 5 -Can you identify short and longer notes? What affect does this have on the piece of music? Can you hear short short short long notes at the start of the piece of music?
