5/6W Autumn Term 2019

Welcome 5/6W

We have made an excellent start to the year! All children have been working really hard across all subjects and we have lots of our work to share.

                                       English
In English we have written explanation texts (non-fiction) and have also studied Gothic fiction and have written our own chapter based on 'Goth Girl' by Chris Riddell.

We enjoyed improvising our own dialogue. Can you guess what we might be saying?

                                     Topic

Our topic for this half term is 'Making the News'. We have learnt about different forms of communication through time. We used our science knowledge of circuits to make a Morse code machine. We were surprised about how difficult it was to send and interpret messages longer than one word. The children identified reasons why the development of Morse was important but also why it is no longer used today as a form of communication.

We have set up our own newspaper companies and have reported on the sinking of the Titanic. The children have particularly enjoyed taking on different roles and learnt about the importance of managing their companies and resources.

We invited Anthony into school who is a newspaper photographer. He shared some of the different photographs he has taken and also the equipment he uses

ART day

We have studied the work of Henry Moore. First we discussed and analysed the different techniques that he used to capture the emotions of people in air raid shelters during WW2. We then practised different techniques that he used to create his art work using a range of materials. We particularly enjoyed experimenting with using both chalk and watercolours to create different textures. Linked to our topic we based our final designs on the sinking of the Titanic.
