It has been a great half-term, with the children producing some amazing writing.  Our guided reading text, 'The Silver Sword' by Ian Serraillier has been our inspiration - linking also to our topic of WW2. I read the book as a child (reading it many times since) and the children have loved it!  We used the book to inspire discussions about many of the aspects of WW2 and the impact on the lives of children.  We have taken ideas from the book as a focus for our discussion and of course the rich imagery and vocabulary that is used within the book.

We always focus on grammar and continually look at the impact on the reader when grammar is used effectively.  Vocabulary always plays a central role for us, we have been learning a wide range of new words which we try to use in our writing.

I am encouraging the children to keep a Creative Writing book which is having a major effect on them seeing themselves as authors.  Maybe another Ian Serraillier will come out of Handford Hall in the future!
